Very-low-birth-weight infants treated for respiratory distress syndrome received either oral vitamin E or a placebo. After 28 days, fewer infants in the vitamin E group were diagnosed with retinopathy of prematurity than in the placebo group. Moreover, markers of oxidative stress were lower (better) and antioxidant capacity was higher (better) in the vitamin E group.
