Transcription factor

A transcription factor is a protein that regulates specific genes by binding to DNA.

    Summary

Transcription factors include activator transcription factors and repressor transcription factors, which are proteins that regulate genes. Activators can turn genes on by binding to nearby DNA, and repressors can turn genes off by binding to nearby DNA. Because transcription factors are involved in controlling and transcribing genes into RNA and then ultimately into proteins, they are able to change the properties of cells in the body.
