Neural tube defects (NTDs), one of the most common types of birth disorders, are characterized by disruptions in the formation of the central nervous system during early pregnancy. There are many types of NTDs, including spina bifida, anencephaly, and myeloschisis. In some cases, NTDs can be fatal or cause lifelong disability. NTD risk refers to the likelihood of having a pregnancy affected by a NTD.[1]
