Prepulse inhibition (PPI) describes the suppression of the startle reflex to a stimulus (e.g. loud noise) when preceded with a weaker, non-startling version (eg. moderate noise). PPI is a measure of sensorimotor gating, and is impaired in several psychiatric conditions.
